The new International Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) Management System Standard ISO 45001 is due to be published on 12 March 2018.
ISO 45001:2018 will replace OHSAS 18001:2007 and AS/NZS 4801:2001.
In recent years, many of our clients have told us how frustrated they are with the outdated, prescriptive nature of the current OHS Management System Standards. Really, nobody is interested in lengthy policy and procedure manuals that sit on a shelf and gather dust.
This outdated format was highlighted even further with the introduction of the new ISO 9001 (Quality) and ISO 14001 (Environmental) Management System Standards in 2015.
The Great News!
The great news is that the new ISO 45001 provides a framework to support the business operations, enabling the business to embrace the intent of the Standard without being bogged down with the burden of outdated prescriptive clauses.
It follows the same high-level structure approach as the other new ISO Management System Standards, such as ISO 9001 (Quality), ISO 14001 (Environmental) and ISO 27001 (Information Security).
In developing this new Standard, consideration has been given to the content and structure of the other international standards, which will allow for a relatively easy migration from using an existing OHS Management System Standard to using ISO 45001, and will also allow for easy alignment and integration with the requirements of the other ISO Management System Standards, into the organisation’s overall management processes.
What do you get if you implement ISO 45001 in your business?
When can you achieve Certification?
If your business management system is already certified to OHSAS 18001 and/or AS/NZS 4801, there’ll be a three-year transition window to update your management system to the requirements of the new Standard.
For organisations who haven’t yet achieved Certification to an OHS Management System Standard, and are aiming to achieve Certification from June 2018 onwards, we recommend working to the new requirements of ISO 45001:2018.
However, if you’re looking to be re-certified for OHS, or certified for the first time, before June 2018, you’ll probably still need to be certified to the old Standard(s). The reason is that it usually takes the Conformity Assessment Bodies and the Accreditation Bodies a few months to establish their processes around Certification to a new Standard.
