NSW Goverment Environmental Management System Guidelines 3rd Edition

NSW Government Environmental Management Systems (EMS) Guidelines (Edition 3)

The NSW Government Environmental Management Systems Guidelines sets out the criteria for the minimum requirements of a Corporate EMS, as required to undertake construction and infrastructure projects (for all contracts valued at $10million or more, and for contracts under $10million if they are environmentally sensitive) for NSW Government agencies.

The Guidelines

The Guidelines have been developed to enable NSW Government agencies which undertake construction and infrastructure projects to work with the construction industry in a manner that:

  • Provides a consistent minimum standard for environmental performance across all NSW construction and infrastructure projects
  • Facilitates improved environmental performance by the construction industry in NSW
  • Facilitates a systematic approach to environmental management
  • Improves planning and reduces environmental incidents
  • Supports all stakeholders in demonstrating they are meeting their obligations under environmental legislation.

Something you should know…

If your business is already Certified (or working towards Certification) to ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management Systems, this is deemed to comply with the requirements of the NSW Government Environmental Management Systems Guidelines (Edition 3), and you don’t need this separate Certification to the Guidelines.

What are the benefits of
these Guidelines for your business?

Via a reduction in waste and consumption of resources

With greater operational efficiency, improved internal controls and improved public perception

Your Certification to the Guidelines could be the point of difference that wins you your next contract, improving the perception your marketplace has of your business

Now that you qualify to tender for projects for NSW Government agencies with a contract value of $10million or more, or contracts under $10million which are environmentally sensitive

Certification requirements demonstrate an innovative and forward-thinking approach to your customers, and that environmental legal and regulatory requirements are being met and continually monitored

What types of businesses will benefit from Certification to the NSW Govt EMS Guidelines?

The main reason for Certification to the NSW Government Environmental Management Systems Guidelines is to enable your business to tender for and work on construction and infrastructure projects, with a contract value of $10million or more, for NSW Government agencies.

A few examples of the types of businesses who’d be tendering to work on these projects are:

  • Construction
  • Demolition
  • General Waste Removal
  • Hazardous Waste Removal
  • Civil Construction
  • Traffic Control
  • Plumbing and Drainage
  • And more.

How the Certification Process Works

Firstly we’ll work with you to determine exactly which Standards and Certifications are right for the needs of your business, what you want to achieve out of the process, and identify any deadlines you need to achieve Certifications by. This is your chance to get all your questions answered!

For Certification to the Guidelines, a remote Documentation Review is conducted by one of our Certified Lead Auditors to ensure all required procedures are documented, along with some evidence of implementation. Upon successful completion of the Documentation Review, you will be issued with a Report and Certificate confirming your System’s conformance to the requirements of the NSW Government Environmental Management System Guidelines (Edition 3).

Once Certified: Certificates are valid for 3 years from the date of issue.

At the end of the three-year period: You’ll be required to update to the Edition 4 requirements. (You can read all about the Edition 4 updates here in our Blog).
