NSW Government Environmental Management Systems (EMS) Guidelines (Edition 3)

Sets out the criteria for the minimum requirements of a Corporate EMS, as required to undertake construction and infrastructure projects (for all contracts valued at $10million or more, and for contracts under $10million if they are environmentally sensitive) for NSW Government agencies.

The Guidelines

The Guidelines have been developed to enable NSW Government agencies which undertake construction and infrastructure projects to work with the construction industry in a manner that:

  • Provides a consistent minimum standard for environmental performance across all NSW construction and infrastructure projects
  • Facilitates improved environmental performance by the construction industry in NSW
  • Facilitates a systematic approach to environmental management
  • Improves planning and reduces environmental incidents
  • Supports all stakeholders in demonstrating they are meeting their obligations under environmental legislation.

Something you should know…

If your business is already Certified (or working towards Certification) to ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management Systems, this is deemed to comply with the requirements of the NSW Government Environmental Management System Guidelines (Edition 3), and you don’t need this separate Certification to the Guidelines.

How the Certification Process Works

Firstly we’ll work with you to determine exactly which Standards and Certifications are right for the needs of your business, what you want to achieve out of the process, and identify any deadlines you need to achieve Certifications by. This is your chance to get all your questions answered! Then we’ll go through with you what you already have in place and how effective you think it is, and what you’d like to see change. Depending on what you already have, the next step might be a Gap Analysis against the requirements of the Guidelines – this will give us a to-do list of what needs to be done before commencing the formal Certification process. Then it’s time for your Certification Audit. The Certification Audit is a full review of your documentation and work records at your workplace to ensure it covers all areas of the Guidelines. Certification to the Guidelines requires a Certification Audit once every three years.
